Aunt Ida's 95th birthday celebration

April 2024

This road trip is a bit different; we’re traveling without the RV and will spend one night in a hotel.  It’s just a quick trip up to Hampton Virginia to Millie’s Aunt Ida’s 95th birthday celebration.

Our plan was to drive to Edenton North Carolina on Saturday April 28th and spend the night there. The next day we would drive to Sandy Bottom Nature Park in Hampton Virginia for the birthday party.

The driving part went well, we were very dissatisfied with the condition of the hotel and opted to drive to Elizabeth City where we could get better accommodations. That went well and that’s all I will say about that.

Ida’s family had reserved a large covered pavilion at a local park called Sandy Bottom. Somewhere around 50 people were in attendance, some friends and a large extended family. There was plenty of food, some was catered and a lot more was brought by guests.

Everyone seemed to be having a good time, the adults socializing and the kids playing games and hiking in the park. Of course, Ida was the queen for the day and much attention was given to her. They played a family history trivia game, and I was amazed at Ida’s recall of the events. You would not believe this woman was 95 years old. Millie got to spend quite a bit of quality time with her aunt.

When the celebration started to wind down, we said our goodbyes and started driving home. We didn’t have a plan; we’d decide how much of the 340+/- mile trip we wanted to drive as we got down the road.

Being a Sunday, traffic was light, and we made excellent time on the return route that we were very familiar with. We soon realized it was going to be very easy to make it home today and even if we had to drive after sundown, we would be on the home stretch.
